SHE CAN be spotted around the capitalcarryingherbeloved e10,000 Hermes Birkin handbags and sporting a haute couture wardrobethat is the envy of most women from 18 to80,butyesterday,inspiteof wearing top-to-toe Chanel, Celia Larkins style was a little out of sorts.
Attending the Mahon Tribunal, there was a somewhat dowdy aspect to herimpeccable fashion sense. And yet, as she sashayed into the Dublin Castlecourtyard yesterday, 48-year-old Ms Larkin still managed to cut quite the dash.
With her coiffed hair and perfectly applied make-up,shewasawelcomeburstof colour among the Tribunals tiresome contingent of black-clad barristers andhacks.
Despitehersurroundings, shelooked serene and calm. And why shouldnt she? Shes practically an old hand atthe Tribunal at this stage, delivering her evidence succintly and neverfluffing her lines.
Perhaps a tough afternoon of questioning beckoned but we cant imagine muchflusters Celia, a woman whose LED Light Bulb MR16-3W quietly confident professionalism is matched onlyby her sartorial savoir-faire.
But yesterday, we were sadly uninspired by her outfit.
She wore a creased ivory zip-up effort, that rather resembled a Brass Brooch beauticiansuniform, and a pair of oversized Chanel glassesE210so sprawling that they hid most of her face. Where her gleaming white smileusually resides, she looked rather glum, sulky even, some might say.
While the dress may have failed to pass muster, her choice of accessories was,as ever, spot-on.
Her handbag, the classic Chanel 2.55, is the choice of the fashion-literateaccessory snob, carried by the effortlessly chic, and the tremendously wealthyit retails in the region of e2,000. Of course then this is a womanwho, whenprofiledforItalian Vogue in 2003 in a feature entitled Celias Dublin, cited A-list eaterieShanahans On TheGreenasher favourite restaurant, when the rest of us might namecheck Eddie Rockets.
Then given her consumer credentialsin 2005 Bertie memorably appointed her to the board of the National ConsumerAgencyone can expect that wherever Celia is sourcing her finery, she is getting thebest value for money. The savings, one suspects she saves for those hautecuisine steak dinners. Yes, its a good life.
Her jewellery carries an understated style cachet.
Pearlsbetraynotyouthnorage, but money. They are upmarket without being uptight, expensive without being atall tacky.
One has to wonder whether they are the same pearls bought in Shanghais Ru PeiPei Pearls and Jewellery in 2005 during the former taoiseachs Chinese trademission on which Celia was also present.
She has teamed the pearls with a pair of fittingly old school earringsgold with pearl insetsperfect for her look of classic glamour and finished with two-tone Chanelcourts yours for a snip at around ?390.
TheoneaccessorythatCelia was, no doubt, hoping to conceal duringtheafternoonwasthe
embroidered patches thundering great plastercast on her right hand.We can only speculate thatshe left her velvet glove at home...
